You may perhaps have seen our dental clinic mentioned in the national media this week. Or maybe you’re one of our followers on Facebook or Twitter in which case you already know that Karl, one of our dentists here at Shelbourne Clinic, won the overall award of Sensodyne Sensitive Dentist of the Year!
This award, supported by the Journal of the Irish Dental Association, is unique in that patients nominate the dentist for consideration. I can’t nominate myself or my friends!

Karl was nominated by a patient who was complaining about very swollen and bleeding gums and swollen glands. Karl insisted that she get a blood test carried out. It turned out to be Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Needless to say this was pretty serious. Fortunately she managed to overcome the Leukaemia and has made a full recovery.
The awards ceremony was a black-tie affair, so it was a chance for the whole team to get out the party frocks and dust off the tuxedos

Karl knew he’d been short-listed a few weeks ago out of over 400 nominations received, and we were all delighted when he won both the Dublin regional award and the overall national award as well. There was an additional surprise on the night as it turned out the patient who had nominated him was there too!
Don’t we scrub up well!
Of course an award like this can only reflect one single episode. But, in the nearly ten years we’ve been providing dental care here in the Dublin Docklands, we’ve always strived to do our very best for our patients. It’s really lovely to get recognition for that.
