With lent almost over, many of us are dreaming about chocolate and will be counting down the minutes until Easter Sunday arrives!
We all love tucking in to those lovely chocolate Easter Eggs and sugary treats but as dental professionals, we should remind you that it is really important not to over indulge and of course not to neglect your brushing and flossing either.
We’ve listed below a few simple tips you should use when enjoying your Easter Eggs:
1) If you are going to have some of your egg, try and have it at mealtimes rather than in between meals. Our mouths can withstand three to four sugar (acid) attacks per day so better to have that sugar fix at mealtimes.
2) Have a glass of water after having your chocolate fix. This will help wash away some of the sugars which create acid and lead to tooth decay. Public water supplies in Ireland contain fluoride which also helps protect your teeth.
3) If possible, brush your teeth with a soft bristled brush and use fluoridated toothpaste. One handy after brushing is to take a pea sized amount of toothpaste and gently rub it onto the tooth and gums and leave it there i.e. don’t rinse it off. This gives added protection against decay and acid attacks.
Happy Easter from all of us here at Shelbourne Dental Clinic 🙂
